Description

These Fried Cornbread Hoecakes are golden, crispy delights that deliver comfort in every bite, perfect for any meal or occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Oil for frying
  • Optional: cheese, fresh herbs, jalapeños, honey or maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir together until well mixed.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and melted butter until frothy and combined.
  3. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry mixture until just combined.
  4. Heat a generous amount of oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, careful not to overcrowd the skillet.
  6. Cook until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Serve warm, topped with your favorite options—cheese, fresh herbs, or honey or maple syrup!

Notes

These hoecakes are best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet for a crispy texture.
