Description
A unique twist on classic French onion soup, these burgers feature juicy beef patties topped with caramelized onions and melted cheese.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices Provolone or Gruyere cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
- Beef broth
- Optional: fresh thyme
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form into four patties, making indentations in the center.
- Cook patties on grill or stovetop until desired doneness is reached. Add fresh thyme if desired.
- Top each patty with cheese in the last few minutes of cooking and cover to melt.
- Assemble burgers by placing patties on buns, adding caramelized onions, and drizzling with beef broth. Serve hot.
Notes
Caramelized onions can be made a day in advance. For a lighter burger, substitute ground beef with turkey or a plant-based alternative.
