Description

A unique twist on classic French onion soup, these burgers feature juicy beef patties topped with caramelized onions and melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices Provolone or Gruyere cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Beef broth
  • Optional: fresh thyme

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form into four patties, making indentations in the center.
  3. Cook patties on grill or stovetop until desired doneness is reached. Add fresh thyme if desired.
  4. Top each patty with cheese in the last few minutes of cooking and cover to melt.
  5. Assemble burgers by placing patties on buns, adding caramelized onions, and drizzling with beef broth. Serve hot.

Notes

Caramelized onions can be made a day in advance. For a lighter burger, substitute ground beef with turkey or a plant-based alternative.
