Ingredients

- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 3/4 cups hot water
- Optional toppings: whipped cream or vanilla ice cream
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Combine the granulated sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl, mixing well.
- Stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- Mix the brown sugar and hot water in a separate bowl, then gently pour this over the batter—be sure not to stir!
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the top is set and crispy.
- Cool for a few minutes before serving, topping with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired.
Notes
Can be prepared ahead of time. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
