- 1/2 cup molasses

Instructions
- Whisk together flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a bowl until well combined.
- Beat the softened butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add molasses, egg, and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
- Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 60 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Cut out cookie shapes using a gingerbread man cutter and place them on a baking sheet.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes until firm but slightly soft in the center.
- Decorate with royal icing as desired once cooled.
Notes
The dough can be made ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 3 days. Store cookies in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
